چکیده

OBJECTIVES: Approximately 20% of BALB/cCF mice are born with partial or total absence of the corpus callosum. Here, we analyzed testosterone and free thyroxin blood levels in adult male mice of this strain in order to see if these hormones are related to the incidence of callosal defects. METHODS: Blood collected from the axillary blood vessels of 12 normal and 10 acallosal deeply anesthetized adult male mice was used in order to determine testosterone and free thyroxin levels through chemiluminescence (IMMULITE, Diagnostics Products Corporation, USA). RESULTS: No significant difference (one-way ANOVA: F = 0.11, df = 1, p > 0.10) was found between normal ( = 1.95, SD = 0.62) and acallosal ( = 1.86, SD = 0.62) mice for free thyroxin level. On the other hand, in those mice that had detectable testosterone levels (above 0.2 ng/ml), a significant difference was found (t = 2.8, df = 6.06, p = 0.03): normal mice (n = 7, = 8.73, SD = 7.64) had a higher level than acallosal mice (n = 4, = 0.62, SD = 0.41). CONCLUSIONS: The present results indicate that the incidence of callosal agenesis is not related to free thyroxin levels in the blood of adult BALB/cCF mice. On the other hand, in spite of the fact that low testosterone levels seems to be frequent in male mice of this strain, acallosal mice tend to have lower levels of this hormone than normal mice.

X-Linked Lissencephaly with Absent Corpus Callosum and Ambiguous Genitalia: A Case Report

Background: X-linked lissencephaly with ambiguous genitalia (XLAG) is a recently described genetic disorder, in which patients present with lissencephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum, refractory epilepsy of neonatal onset, acquired microcephaly, and male genotype with ambiguous genitalia. XLAG is responsible for a severe neurological disorder of neonatal onset in boys. A gyration defect con...

Large Sphenoethmoidal Encephalocele Associated with Agenesis of Corpus Callosum and Cleft Palate

Basal encephalocele is a rare craniofacial anomaly. In the present paper we report a 10-year-old boy presented with cleft palate, congenital nystagmus, and hypertelorism. During preoperative evaluation for cleft palate repair, a pulsatile mass was detected in the pharynx. Magnetic resonance imaging showed sphenoethmoidal type of basal encephalocele and agenesis of corpus callosum. Neurosurgical...

Fiber Tractography and Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Children with Agenesis and Dysgenesis of Corpus Callosum: A Clinico-Radiological Correlation

Background Corpus callosum is the largest commissure in human brain. It consists of tightly packed white matter tracts connecting the two cerebral hemispheres.  In this study we aimed to evaluate role of fiber tractography (FT), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in ped...

Effect of Exogenous Testosterone, Finasteride, and Castration on serum level of Thyroxin

Background: The secretion of thyroxin (T4) as the main hormone of thyroid gland is regulated by androgens. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of testosterone and finasteride administration and castration on serum levels of T4 and to show the effect of this regulation on total body weight, weight of testis, and the weight of prostate. Methods: Male adult rats (n = 32) were divided in...
